Our desire is to reach out and serve others. From the early years of our ministry, First Wesleyan has intentionally identified this as an essential mission for our church, both corporately and individually.
Millions of people in the world today are without work or underemployed. Hundreds right here in our city. Without meaningful work, there is a loss of purpose and dignity. This creates a vicious cycle of poverty—economically, spiritually, and emotionally.
But without employment, and the means to actually provide for themselves and their families, the cycle continues. What if we started lending a hand instead of just a handout?
We have partnered with the Haven of Rest to launch a series of classes that help people gain the proper perspective on work and in essence, help them understand the character and a work ethic that can make them highly employable for the rest of their lives. We utilize leaders from the business community as well as men and women from First Wes to come alongside the students to encourage them and support them in their efforts to make a better life for themselves and their families. We have graduated three classes as of the fall of 2017 with 85% of the graduates finding meaningful employment or enrolling in training programs for specific skills.
There are several levels of involvement available.
1 in 6 children struggle with food in our area. Our Red Bag program desires to be part of the solution!
Our goal is to provide 50 area children with a backpack filled with food each week throughout the school year. This food helps create the possibility of a positive educational experience!
Be a part of this great opportunity to help our community!
Time commitment: An hour and a half. Every six weeks during the school year.
